- Only native land mammal in hawaii. Behaviors- Roost among trees in areas near forests. leaves its roost shortly before or after sunset and returns before sunrise. Adaptations- Before agriculture the only ate native insects, but now eats from the agriculture.
Hawaiian Monk Seal-
Behaviors- Rest on beaches during the day. They haul-out on sand, corals and volcanic rock. They are mainly nocturnal. Adaptations- When ashore they hold there breath a long time which makes there heart rate low, this makes there body heat low. This makes it protected against heat exposure.
Indian Mongoose
Behaviors- They are mostly active during the day. They eat birds, bird eggs, native insects, fruits, berries.
Adaptations- they can run at very high speeds. There are no predators to the Indian Mongoose.
Northern Elephant Seal
Behaviors- They spend up to two hours diving. They eat marine animals such as ratfish, swell sharks, ells, and squid.
Adaptations- They have blubber that keeps them warm. They don't have fur. They have a skin that is much more waterproof than fur.
Axis Deer
Behaviors- They stay in herds. the females will stay together with there young. Female can be aggressive. they make different noises to let others know if there are predators.
Mule Deer- Odocoileus hemionus
Behaviors- The male mule deer can be aggressive.
Adaptations- The mule deer can jump and land on all fours feet hitting the ground together. this gives them and advantage. they can out run preditors in rough terraine. this also makes it so they can change direction.
Brush-Tailed Rock Wallaby- Petrogale penicillata
Behaviors- They are social animals that create small colonies. When males are in close proximity they get into villent interactions. They have a diet of leaves, ferns, roots, bark, fruit, seeds, and flowers
Adaptations- They have aggresive behavior of nose jabbing.
